After watching “Outposts of Opportunities” and “Evolving Opportunities” I noticed as Immokalee developed many communities have been seen throughout the years. Many of these communities have been the Seminole Native American tribes, farmers and ranchers, as well as immigrants from a variety of different places. The way Immokalee started reminds me of how my hometown began. I grew up in a combination of three cities a little bit north of Tampa, Land ‘O Lakes, Wesley Chapel, and Zephyrhills. These cities used to be known for their beautiful orange groves. A long time ago farmers owned acres upon acres of these orange groves. When communities and developments started to emerge many of these farmers sold most of their land for a bigger profit. I can remember sitting in my first grade class and being able to smell the orange groves across the street being burnt down so that construction on housing developments could begin. A few years later orange groves were far and few between. We also had lots of cow pastures in these cities, and now just about everywhere you go there are developments, shops, and offices.
I would have to say that the workers in Immokalee represent the New American Dream and that the farmers and ranchers represent the Old American Dream. I believe Immokalee is still driven by agriculture and will continue to be in the future. The casino, I believe will continue to grow and provide for Immokalee, but it could also be a downfall to those individuals who believe they can get rich fast.
Within the past decades Immokalee has survived the lack of development and continues to be successful. In 10 years, I can see Immokalee growing a little bit in the development area, but would continue to be driven by farm work.
