Anna Quindlen's article "A Quilt of a Country: Out of Many, One?" elaborates on the idea that America is a melting pot. She compares the idea to a quilt where little pieces of fabric come together to create something bigger and better. Quindlen also makes the point that no two people are alike in this country and that when you think of America there is not one 'type' of person you picture. She also makes the point that most of the time when we as citizens become united it is due to a tragedy and as time goes on after the event we tend to go our separate ways.

I believe Quindlen is correct in everything she states in her article. America is a safe haven for those in struggling countries and we tend to see more and more people moving into the country. After reading the article the idea of only becoming united after horrible events was a disappointing realization. After 9-11 the American flag was displayed everywhere you went and everyone seemed nicer to one another. Since the years have gone by we have been drifting apart and I believe that is why the title of the article is left as a question. Are we really 'One' or are we many individuals who just happen to live relatively close to one another?

  1. I feel the same way as you do in your second paragraph. I got the same information and feeling out of Quindlen's response as you did. I also love how you ended the second paragraph with a question. It adds a bit of individuality to your response.
